Computer Recycling Drive for Earth Week
Why: The Computer Recycling Program at IndependenceFirst accepts donated computers and refurbishes them, making them available to people with disabilities who otherwise couldn't afford to purchase one. We're in short supply so please direct your spring cleaning efforts to making a donation to our program with an old computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. (We prefer/minimum requirements: Pentium III, 256 or 512 MB, 800 MHz, 17 inch monitors for reuse potential).
How It Works: Usable computers will be refurbished and reused in the program. Hard drives can be cleaned out by you or us (according to strict protocol to avoid sharing of your content/personal identity). If you'd prefer, you can remove your hard drive prior to donation or we can remove and replace it as an alternative. This is a safe recycling program that has existed without issues for over 8 years. Computers that are unusable will be put directly onto a truck from a local certified computer recycler. Its a win-win-win! You get rid of something you don't need and get a tax deduction, people with disabilities get a computer and the landfills are spared of waste.
Adopt-A-Beach Training – Racine
The Great Lakes are home to some of the most beautiful beaches and shoreline areas in the world. It's our responsibility to ensure their health. The Alliance’s Adopt-a-Beach™ teams are creating positive changes for our Great Lakes.
This training is for new and returning adopters and will include a review of Adopt-A-Beach™ data collection forms and protocol. This is a great opportunity to have fun with others that share your love for the Great Lakes.

15th Annual Spring River Cleanup
We are currently seeking volunteers for our 2010 Spring River Cleanup. It’s part of Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful Day, and The All-American Cleanup. Our 15th Annual Spring River Cleanup takes place April 17, 2010 from 9am-Noon at parks and river-parkways throughout the Greater Milwaukee area.
We provide all the garbage bags and gloves, we just need people to help pick up trash & debris. Join us for one of the largest volunteer events in the state and be a part of the biggest cleanup day in Milwaukee. Help us beautify our river areas and ready their adjoining parks for the coming summer!
After you're done pulling shopping carts out of the river - join us for FREE food, drink, and live music. It will take place at Gordon Park (1321 E. Locust St.) from 12:30am – 3:00pm. Bring bizarre trash items that you find at your cleanup site. We’ll be giving away prizes for the strangest items found as well as to the most creative Trash-to-Art Sculpture.
