2009 Wisconsin Bike Summit an Outstanding Success!

Bicycling history was made in Wisconsin Monday and Tuesday as more than 450 bicycling enthusiasts from across the state attended the 2009 Wisconsin Bike Summit in Madison. The two-day event featured talks on advocacy, legislative training and a "Ride on the Capitol" media event, where more than 200 bicyclists pedaled from Monona Terrace to the State Capitol to speak to their Legislators about the importance of bicycling in our communities.

We asked our legislators for three important things:

  1. 3% of the Federal Transportation funds be devoted to bicycle infrastructure
  2. Support of the upcoming Complete Streets Legislation
  3. Support the "Car-Dooring" Legislation

We gained a huge win while at the capitol; the "Car-Dooring Legislation" passed unanimous in both the Senate and the House. But our work is far from done. The state budget is being debated and cyclists from around the state need to contact their legislators to ask for 3% of Federal Transportation funds and support of Complete Streets legislation. Find out how to contact your legislator here.

It was tremendous to see so many committed cyclists come to Madison from across Wisconsin. We hope the 2009 Wisconsin Bicycle Summit will prove to be a watershed event, setting the course for Wisconsin to be among the best places in the world to be on a bike.
