Senate Bill Offers Aid for Ailing Beaches

The U.S. Senate is considering a bill that would increase funding for beaches to $60 million a year to ensure your health when you visit the beach.
The Senate bill would pay for state and local beach health monitoring, public notification and -- most importantly -- removal of pollution that can make you and your family sick.
Though studies show beaches are this country's leading tourist destination, many people are finding them closed when they get there.
More than 20,000 beach closing and advisory days occur each year at ocean, bay and Great Lakes beaches because of contamination by stormwater, sewage and other sources that can make swimmers sick, according to U.S. EPA data.
