Spring cleanup brings thousands to clean rivers

An estimated 3,000 people came out on Saturday April 18 to clean rivers and streams throughout the watershed. While pulling tires, shopping carts, plastic bags and other junk from the rivers, volunteers also kept an eye out for the strangest items found in the river. The winning items included an antique beer sign, a microwave that had been crushed into the shape of a sphere, a trilobite fossil, and a rusted-out mailbox.

The weather could not have been better - sunny skies and nearly 70 degree temperatures made it feel like spring. After working for about three hours in the morning, volunteers joined Riverkeeper at the Trash Bash to gather, eat, drink and celebrate the success of the day.

Thank you to everyone who came out to help on Saturday, as well as those who made contributions to the event. The staff and board of Riverkeeper send a special thank you out to Forest County Potawatomi Community Foundation for taking a lead role in sponsorship, as well as American Transmission Co., Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren law firm, We Energies, Forrer Business Interiors, Coalesse and Steelcase for their help. We could not have done this event without these sponsors and the many many volunteers who lent a hand!
