Students Take Action in Wake of MKE Water Summit
Students from southeastern Wisconsin are thinking globally and acting locally when it comes to water conservation, sending off a stewardship statement to regional Great Lakes leaders while leading their own schools in conservation projects.
More than 100 students from 18 schools attended a Lake Michigan Student Summit at the Milwaukee Public Museum and Discovery World in May -- an event held to foster youth leadership and stewardship on the issue of local water conservation.
Already schools have embarked on projects ranging from installing rain barrels to planning a rain garden to piling up a week’s worth of used water bottles in a main hall.
“These students started this project barely aware of ‘that lake’ down the street. Now they know it is an inland sea, a resource of global importance and a life-giver,” said Todd Brennan, Wisconsin outreach coordinator for the Alliance for the Great Lakes. “As they head off this summer to visit our beaches and swim in the lakes, they’ll have a greater appreciation for the water.”
